Senate adopts resolution backing free press after Trump attacks

Al's notes

Newspapers from ME to Hawaii pushed back against President Donald Trump's attacks on "fake news" with a co-ordinated series of editorials in defence of a free press on Thursday - and, not surprisingly, Trump didn't take it silently.

Cries of fake news and hate speech against journalists risk undermining our democracy. The paper on Wednesday published an editorial headlined "Journalists are not the Enemy".

"I'm so proud of myself, I didnt call them the fake news media.

Trump began denouncing mainstream media outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN and NBC as "fake news media" and "the enemy of the American people", soon after his inauguration in 2017.

Trump's definition of "fake news" is anything that's critical of him, and he has applied it to every major news organization except Fox News, which regularly beats the drum for reactionary conservative thought and from which he seems to draw most of his weirdest policy proposals.

The president blasted NYT and WP as "anti-Trump haters" who "do nothing but write bad stories even on very positive achievements - they will never change".

"The greatness of America is dependent on the role of a free press to speak the truth to the powerful".

The former White House press secretary under former President George W. Bush pointed out the blatant hypocrisy in a coordinated effort by hundreds of newspapers to publish anti-Trump editorials, according to The Hill. In Nebraska, a state that voted 58.7% in favor of President Trump during the 2016 election, the Omaha World Herald stated: "History has demonstrated, time and again, the importance of journalism in shining a light on government and explaining key issues confronting communities and our nation".

The Observer's prediction that Trump would continue to rail against the press came true later Thursday morning.

The Globe's editorial accused Trump of carrying out a "sustained assault on the free press".

Trump doubled down on his criticism on Thursday in a fresh attack on the media. Presidents from John Adams to Richard Nixon to Barack Obama often scuffled with the press corps.

But some of Trump's supporters have cheered him on, arguing that the press is abusively biased against his presidency. "BUT WE ARE WINNING", he added, returning to all-caps. That includes five employees of the Capital Gazette who were killed in June.

Freeman added: "If the Globe's effort is actually not meant to broaden its audience but instead to energise those who already oppose the president, this again may be a strategy more suited to politics than to journalism".

We're just not coordinating with other news organisations because the president's opinion, frankly, is not just that important to us.

That last sentiment made some journalists skittish.

Trump has also criticised The Boston Globe, which spearheaded the newspaper editorial campaign.

In the days leading up to Thursday's coordinated effort, Pritchard said it was key that each paper wrote its own message.

"It will provide Trump with the circumstantial evidence of the existence of a national press cabal that has been convened exclusively to opposes him", he said.

"The president himself already treats the media as a cabal - "enemies of the people, ' he has called us, suggesting over and over that we're in cahoots to do damage to the country", Nicholas Goldberg, editor of the Los Angeles Times" editorial pages, wrote Thursday. A recent poll shows 51 percent of GOP respondents identify with his "enemy of the people" line.
