Search Underway for Marine Who Went Overboard Near the Philippines

Multiple searches have been conducted aboard the ship to locate the missing Marine as round-the-clock rescue operations continue in the Sulu Sea and Surigao Strait, according to the news release.

The Marine, whose identity is being withheld, was attached to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the amphibious warship USS Essex when he was reported missing.

The Philippine government facilitated diplomatic clearance for United States assets involved in the search and rescue operation.

The Navy says their Philippines counterparts are also helping in the search.

"We allowed the entry of rescue ships and aircraft", said Lorenzana, as he confirmed that the U.S. military made the request to give way for an all-out search and rescue missions.

The ship was conducting "routine operations in the Sulu Sea" at the time, the California based unit said in the statement, which was posted on its social media sites.

"As of now there has been no update on whether the marine has been recovered", Lorenzana added.

The operations have covered roughly 3,000 square nautical miles after a US Navy P-8 aircraft and Philippine Coast Guard vessels expanded the search area.

"We initially dispatched air search and rescue team during the first few hours after it was reported but without positive result", said Western Mindanao Command chief Lieutenant General Arnel dela Vega.

"It is an all-hands effort to find our missing Marine", U.S. Navy Capt. Gerald Olin, commander, Amphibious Squadron One and the on-scene commander of the search and rescue operation, said in a statement.

American and Philippine forces are scouring the waters in the Pacific for a lost Marine, reported missing during joint military drills of the Philippines' southwest coastline, officials at Marine Corps headquarters said Friday.

"We remain committed to searching for and finding our Marine".
