Saudi Arabia stops all medical treatment programs in Canada

Saudi Arabia expelling Canadian ambassador and suspending new trade with Canada

The Saudi government on Sunday recalled its ambassador to Ottawa, barred Canada´s envoy from returning and placed a ban on new trade, denouncing Canada for urging the release of jailed rights activists.

Ms. Nauert told reporters at the State Department Tuesday that Washington is well aware of human rights concerns regarding Saudi Arabia, but she avoided taking a hard position on the Canada-Saudi spat.

Among those detained by Riyadh is Loujain al-Hathloul, 28, who appeared with the Duchess of Sussex, then Meghan Markle, at a One Young World summit in Canada two years ago where they were pictured in a Vanity Fair photoshoot.

"Our government will never hesitate to promote these values and believes that this dialogue is critical to global diplomacy", she added.

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Monday that Canada would not be cowed by Saudi actions.

She reiterated that Ottawa should suspend the sale of armoured vehicles to the Saudis, claiming that Amnesty still has strong reasons to believe they are being used in Yemen to commit serious human rights violations. "We can only stand with Saudi Arabia in defending its sovereignty and taking the necessary measures to protect its laws", Anwar Gargash, the minister of state for foreign affairs in the United Arab Emirates, tweeted Monday. His wife, Ensaf Haidar, lives in Canada and recently became a Canadian citizen.

Among the arrested activists is Samar Badawi, whose writer brother Raif Badawi was arrested in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and later sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison for insulting Islam while blogging.

While both countries are friends of the US, "both sides need to diplomatically resolve this together", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told a media briefing later Tuesday. So far, Canada and Amnesty International are the only global entities to speak out against the arrests and they have called on other states such as the United Kingdom, the USA and France to follow suit.

The Saudi foreign ministry statement expressed "disbelief [at] this negative unfounded comment, which was not based [on] any accurate or true information".

Saudi's foreign ministry called the statement "a major, unacceptable affront to the kingdom's laws and judicial process".

It also has 216 medical residents and fellows from Saudi Arabia who are being trained in hospitals affiliated with the university under a long-standing program.

It is unclear what, if any, implications the move has for existing trade ties between the two countries.

However, despite the potential impact of his government's foreign policy on local schools and students studying in Okanagan, Fuhr said he stands behind Canada's foreign affairs minister. Students already in the country would be relocated.

York University, meanwhile, said 115 Saudi students are now enrolled at the Toronto university and that it is also awaiting further information. Both the Saudi and Canadian ambassadors were away on leave when it was made.

But the prince, who took power in June 2017, has also been responsible for a number of high-profile crackdowns on people that could present a challenge to his authority, including arrests of clerics, intellectuals, businessmen and other members of the royal family.
