Russia Says U.S. Demand For Chemical Inspectors 'Hypocritical'

Donald Trump Vladimir Putin

On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department announced new sanctions on Russian Federation over the use of a nerve agent to poison ex-Moscow spy Sergei Skripal in Britain in March, who miraculously survived the assassination attempt.

On Friday, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Russian Federation would regard any US move to curb the activities of its banks as a "declaration of economic war" and would take retaliatory action.

The U.S. defense budget was many times greater than that of Russia's and therefore it is groundless for Washington to portray Russian Federation as a threat to anyone, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a daily briefing. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

We will add, after a meeting July 16 with Putin at a joint press conference, trump said that constructive dialogue with Russian Federation opens up new avenues to achieve peace and stability in the world. "Our American friends should make no mistake about it", he warned. The currency traded 67.72 per USA dollar on the spot market at the Moscow Exchange Friday.

He said: "We have lowered to the minimum level and will further decrease our investment in the USA economy, in the United States securities".

Russian stocks also tumbled on Friday, with the ruble-denominated MOEX Russia Index falling 1.5 percent and the US dollar-denominated RTS Index dropping 3.68 percent. "This does not bode well for the bilateral relations", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a conference call.

The volume of the new Russian tariffs, in retaliation for US extra tariffs of 25 percent on steel and of 10 percent on aluminum starting March 23, will amount to 87.6 million dollars a year.

The U.S. demand was triggered under a 1991 U.S. law governing incidents involving the use of chemical and biological weapons.

In its statement, the Russian Embassy in Washington accused the U.S. of failing to provide any justification for the action.
