Ronaldo Rushed To Hospital In Ibiza After Coming Down With Pneumonia

The former footballer Ronaldo has reportedly been admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Ibiza, after he came down with pneumonia.

According to reports in local newspaper Diario de Ibiza, the 2002 World Cup victor was taken to Can Misses Hospital on Friday evening with chest pains where he was seen by doctors.

Sources told Diario de Ibiza that Ronaldo was recovering well.

No-one at the private hospital Ronaldo is now said to be a patient at could be contacted early on Sunday for comment.

Ronaldo, whose club career took in spells at Cruzeiro, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Corinthians, is on holiday in Ibiza, where he owns a house.

Pneumonia affects the lungs and is caused by bacterial infection. He is thought to have arrived on the island a few days ago before his illness started.

Symptoms - which include a cough and difficulty breathing - can develop suddenly over 24 to 48 hours. Throughout a prosperous career, he scored 62 goals in 98 global appearances for Brazil.

Ronaldo scored 62 times for Brazil, including both goals when they beat Germany in the 2002 World Cup final.

He finished his career with 12 goals in the World Cup finals, tying with Pele for the all-time record.

Since retirement, however, he has battled thyroid problems and gained significant weight.
