Prehistoric giant shark teeth found on Australian beach

Dr. Erich Fitzgerald at the Jan Juc site where the fossil was found

Using his auto keys, Mullaly carefully pried from the rock a shark tooth about the size of his palm.

According to the museum, these teeth provide evidence that a shark which would have grown to more than 30-feet in length, almost double the size of a great white, "once stalked Australia's ancient oceans" approximately 25 million years ago. During two expeditions taking place last December and January, Fitzgerald led a team of experts to the location where Mullaly found the teeth to excavate. He returned to the boulder a few weeks later and to his surprise dug up several more 3-inch teeth.

That was just one of multiple teeth Mullaly found that day in 2015.

The recently found fossilized mega-shark teeth were dated 25-million-year-old and are now on display at the Melbourne Museum until October 7th.

The shark was about twice the length of a normal great white shark.

Fitzgerald suspected they came from one individual shark and there might be more entombed in the rock.

Philip Mullaly was strolling along an area known as a fossil hotspot at Jan Juc, on the country's famous Great Ocean Road some 100 kilometres (60 miles) from Melbourne, when he found the teeth from a giant prehistoric mega-shark twice the size of a great white, AFP reported. "We need to go back down there and dig'".

In the video below, Fitzgerald comments on the importance of this discovery and the contribution that citizen scientists like Mullaly bring to paleontology.

In total, Mulally said the team took "40 teeth out of that boulder, which is just extraordinary". The find, announced Thursday, marks only the third set of Carcharocles angustidens teeth in the world and the first ever in Australia. This means that the sixgill shark's behavior has not changed much for tens of millions of years. They'll be on display until October 7.

Philip Mullaly found the set of shark teeth in Jan Juc, a renowned fossil site along Victoria's Surf Coast. Although the team found evidence that there was only one megashark there, they found indications that there were several different sixgill sharks on the scene.

Though it was the fiercest predator in the sea during its time, this colossal shark must have died and sunk to the seabed.

"It's shark eating shark", Fitzgerald said.
