Plane crash lands, engine tears off in Manila

Xiamen Air a Boeing passenger plane from China sits on the grassy portion of the runway of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport after it skidded off the runway while landing Friday Aug. 17 2018 in suburban Pasay city southeast of Manila Philippines

A passenger plane operated by China's Xiamen Air veered off a rain-soaked runway after landing at Manila's main airport, disrupting flight schedules on Friday due to a temporary runway closure, officials said.

The aircraft, carrying 157 passengers and eight crew, landed on its second attempt before skidding onto the grass, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines spokesman Eric Apolonio told AFP.

Flight tracking website Airlive reports that flight MF8667 circled for some time near the airport before attempting a landing, and aborting it.

Workers try to remove a Xiamen Air Boeing 737-800 from the tarmac after it skidded off at the runway of Ninoy Aquino International airport in Paranaque, Metro Manila, in the Philippines, August 17, 2018.

"With God's blessing all passengers and the crew were able to evacuate safely and no injuries except for about four who had some superficial scratches".

The Xiamen Airlines plane was at the conclusion of a two-and-a-half-hour flight from the southern Chinese city of Xiamen when the incident reportedly took place.

Investigators retrieved the plane's flight recorder and will get the cockpit voice recorder once the aircraft has been lifted to determine the cause of the accident, Sydiongco said. The Civil Aviation of China said it was sending a team to assist in the investigation.

Several worldwide and domestic flights have been cancelled or diverted due to the closure of the airport, which lies in a densely populated residential and commercial section of metropolitan Manila.

Numerous passengers, who were unaware that they could rebook their flights, simply left the airport in disgust after being left stranded for several hours and upon learning of the suspension of operations.

In a picture from a local plane spotter, the plane appears to have one of the engines detached from the wing.

"We offer no excuses, just a promise to bring NAIA flight operations back to normalcy by tomorrow using all our internal resources and if needed, employ outside resources notwithstanding the cost it will entail", Monreal said in a statement.

The weather has improved but sporadic downpours have occurred.
