Netflix's Latest Test Involves Trailer Ads Played Between Binge Episodes

Netflix

A number of viewers have responded badly to the trial, with many complaining on social media that the site's main appeal is its ad-free, uninterrupted streaming.

Netflix isn't calling the new ads for its original content "commercial breaks", but that hasn't stopped subscribers from voicing their displeasure.

The streaming service tested a new form of promotion on Friday, in which it inserted videos in between TV episodes. "I already pay over $200 a year and watch only a few shows here and there".

If that sounds similar to the sort of conventional TV commercial advertising that subscribers are paying between $8 and $14 per month to avoid, the viewers who say they've encountered the promos thought so, too.

"If you jam ads down my throat for what little time each day I have to watch a movie or TV series, I'll just unsubscribe".

Some users had even reported that the adverts weren't skippable until a certain portion was viewed, mimicking YouTube's ad format - but Netflix has said that that was in error.

Are you guilty of indulging in long binge-watching sessions, and can't wait to watch what happens next on your favourite shows?

"At Netflix, we conduct hundreds of tests every year so we can better understand what helps members more easily find something great to watch".

"Since then, we have been experimenting even more with video based on personalised recommendations for shows and movies on the service or coming shortly, and continue to learn from our members", the spokesperson said.

"Rather than give me the option to skip to the next episode it came up with a full screen "up next" for Rick and Morty and 'but first.' and proceeded to play a full-screen trailer for it and I couldn't go to the next episode of R&M".

"We are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster", Netflix said in a statement to Ars Technica.
