'My name's Elba, Idris Elba': Actor responds to James Bond rumors

Daniel Craig

Idris Elba appears to have mocked continued rumours he is in line to take over as the star of the James Bond franchise, following the latest round of media speculation linking him to the role.

On Sunday morning (August 12), the actor took to Twitter to post a heavily-filtered selfie along with the caption: "my name's Elba, Idris Elba", which mirrors 007's famous catchphrase: "The name's Bond..."

On Friday, the United Kingdom publication The Daily Star tabloid published an article claiming that director Antoine Fuqua reportedly said his friend Bond series producer Barbara Broccoli thinks "it is time" for a black actor to star in the franchise.

His tweet was retweeted thousands of times by excited followers.

One wrote: "If you're the next Bond, it will be the first Bond film I ever see", while another said "please be 007 dont tease us like this get that contract signed!"

People are once again buzzing about the prospect of Idris Elba playing James Bond.

The online version of the Daily Star's story includes multiple promotions for Fuqua's new business, selling headphones that can be worn in the cinema in order to provide a surround-sound experience. "It's all made up stuff". A rep from Elba's team declined to comment, but THR claims sources within his camp are saying that they are not aware of any overtures.

In 2014, Elba said of the potential role that it would be "an honor".

Production on the 25th Bond film, led by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, will begin in December.
