Multiple suspected synthetic cannabis overdoses at park by Yale University

25 people overdose at Connecticut park officials say

The patients were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and St. Raphael's Hospital.

Paramedics and police officers remained at the parkas more people fell ill. Authorities confirm the substance was synthetic cannabis and that other drugs weren't involved in the substance.

No deaths were reported, and most of those brought to local hospitals have been discharged.

Police say initial tests by the Drug Enforcement Administration determined the drugs were not laced with opiates, but more tests are pending.

Officials were testing the blood of the victims to see exactly what they ingested. It has been blamed for overdoses globally. In May, more than 50 people in Brooklyn, New York, overdosed on K2, none fatally.

Police said late Wednesday that they arrested one man on an unrelated warrant and viewed him as a "person of interest" in connection with the drugs the victims were using. His name has not been released.

The DEA is helping to investigate how at least 76 people overdosed in New Haven, Connecticut in the past 24 hours. 'Someone. with malice in their heart took advantage of that, took advantage of this vulnerable population.

The drug is a synthetic version of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC.

They can be anywhere from 2 to 100 times more potent than THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, researchers have said.

This can produce stronger effects, such as an elevated mood or feeling of relaxation.

Federal officials last month issued a warning about the spread of synthetic marijuana across the country.

Mayor Toni Harp said plans were being finalized for Jim Carroll, President Trump's nominee for drug czar, to visit New Haven on Monday.

'This is happening nationwide, ' Harp said. "The substance behind these overdoses is highly unsafe and must be avoided".

"Today's emergency is deeply troubling and illustrative of the very real and serious threat that illicit street drugs pose to health of individuals", Malloy said.

In October, Donald Trump labelled America's opioid epidemic a "public health emergency", giving officials extra powers to tackle the crisis.

Police and fire officials said the K2 was potentially laced with some type of opioid.

A man has been arrested in the United States after more than 40 people overdosed in a CT park on a drug suspected of being laced with an opioid, police say.

Passersby watch in horror as first responders race to treat dozens of people sickened by synthetic marijuana in CT. They say no deaths have been reported so far, but at least six victims were near death.

Vomiting and hallucinating drug users dropped like flies throughout the day as emergency crews raced to the New Haven Green to save lives.
