The Mayo Clinic in Phoenix was rated as one of the best adult hospitals in the country and two other area facilities received national recognition in U.S. News and World Reports' annual rankings, which were released Tuesday.

This year, 158 hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one specialty, up from 152 in 2017-18.

Hospital rankings are determined by scores tallied in 16 fields of specialized care as well as their strength in treating nine bellwether procedures and conditions such as heart failure and lung cancer surgery.

The publisher updated its metrics for this year's rankings, including more of a focus on patient outcomes. Phoenix Children's Hospital was nationally ranked in 10 specialties and was the state's only children's hospital to be recognized.

Some of the adult specialties ranked are 1st for urology, 2nd for rheumatology and 3rd for both orthopedics and pulmonology.

Mayo's top-ranked specialties in Rochester include diabetes and endocrinology, neurology and gynecology.

The hospital's president and CEO, Dr. Wael Barsoum, said the distinction "speaks to the quality of care and universal commitment of all our caregivers to put patients first". Rounding out the top five were Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids and the University of Minnesota Medical Center.
