Koepka rises to world No.2, Tiger and Scott soar

Tiger Woods PGA championship

It is a further nod towards the progress of Tiger Woods that it would now be a shock if he does not play at September's Ryder Cup.

Soon, perhaps those fans should be cheering for Koepka - and with the interest surrounding Wood's resurgence likely to build at every tournament, it should be easy for this bright talent to capitalise.

"The crowd definitely let you know what's going on". I need to continue doing that, because once you're satisfied, you're only going to go downhill. While others were making birdies all over Bellerive, Fowler did, well, nothing. His best shot over a final round of 4-under 66 was a lasered 4-iron to the 16th green that landed 6 feet away and set up a birdie. "I made a bit of a run".

Koepka was responsible for that. Network executives across the country will certainly hope that is the case for Tiger Woods.

Woods said it has been a long time since he felt so good about a loss, finishing two strokes behind Brooks Koepka but serving notice he truly can contend for more major titles.

Brooks Koepka has defended his US Open.

The 28-year-old Floridian also joined Jordan Spieth, Woods, Nicklaus and Tom Watson as the only players with three majors before turning 30 since World War II.

This time one year ago, Woods had concerns that he'd ever play on the PGA Tour again after he'd undergone a back fusion, the fourth time he was forced to rehab from back surgery.

Furyk's opposite number, Thomas Bjorn, has plenty to ponder albeit the automatic qualifying process for Europe's team does not conclude until the end of the Made in Denmark tournament on 2 September. On the back of his sixth place at last month's Open, it capped the 42-year-old's astonishing comeback from a back complaint, which appeared to have wrecked his career.

While the PGA doesn't release information on tickets sales, organizers said more people attended the four-day tournament than a sold-out four-day Cardinals series. For the umpteenth time Rickie was in-the-mix at a major last week but it was sadly all too predictable as he yet again fell short with a disappointing one-over-par round on Sunday. Right from the moment that he sat out the Masters, from the moment he got healthy this year, he hit the tour running.

That was as good as it got.

"Making that putt at least gave me a chance", Woods said. Woods had to get up and down from a bunker to save par.

He needed Koepka to collapse over the last two holes.

Woods mounted a typical charge in a thrilling final round at Bellerive Country Club but it was fellow American Koepka who kept his nerve in the face of relentless pressure to hold him off by two shots.

Koepka joked about working out in a public gym this week with Dustin Johnson and not being recognized.

Woods led at Carnoustie with eight holes to play last month (he lost his lead by going double-bogey, bogey), and at the PGA, following a horrific start (3-over through two holes), he worked his way high up onto the leaderboard over the weekend and stayed there. When he was tied with Adam Scott through 14 holes, with Woods one shot behind, he delivered back-to-back birdies.

The quirky and analytical DeChambeau has become a player Woods has taken to.
