Iran's Khamenei: There Will Be No Talks With 'Duplicitous' US

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Monday government mismanagement has hurt Iran's economy more than US sanctions.

The Associated Press, meanwhile, reported that Khamenei said that negotiation "with the bullying and very eager government of the US means giving it an instrument through which it can add to its hostility".

President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from Iran's nuclear deal with world powers in May and last week the USA began restoring sanctions, exacerbating a financial crisis in Iran that has sent its currency tumbling.

Analysts say U.S. hostility, including its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposition of sanctions, helped fuel the run on Iran's rial. Khamenei also took the opportunity during his Monday diatribe to take a jab at Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and the country's faltering economy. Trump reimposed the sanctions after pulling the United States out of an worldwide accord that aims to curb Iran's nuclear programme.

Khamenei on Saturday called for "swift and just" legal action by new courts set up to tackle corruption after the head of the judiciary said Iran was facing an "economic war", Iranian media reported. They are exaggerating about possibility of a war with Iran. "We have never started a war and they will not confront Iran militarily", Iran's top authority said in a televised speech.

European countries, which still back the 2015 deal, fear Trump's moves will undermine Rouhani and strengthen the hand of his hardline rivals in the clerical establishment.

"The corrupt people (officials) should be punished firmly", Khamenei said on Monday. The protests over the cost of living have often turned into anti-government rallies.

"Our will to enhance our defense power in all fields will increase if the pressure mounts on Iran", Defence Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami said after unveiling the "fully home-made precision-guided" missile. He says Iran must change the way it operates, including its activities in Syria and Yemen.
