Harry Kane Starts For Tottenham Hotspur At Newcastle In Premier League Opener

Spurs achieved goal as Brexit influenced lack of transfers – Pochettino

Headed goals from Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli saw Tottenham Hotspur register an opening day victory against Newcastle United, although Mauricio Pochettino's men were forced to weather a second-half onslaught to secure three points.

Five of Tottenham's starting XI were World Cup semi-finalists this summer and therefore had less than a week of pre-season training after taking late holidays. If you put all the circumstances our players deserve massive, massive credit for the victory because it wasn't easy.

"The team worked hard against a very good side", the Spaniard continued.

Spurs had nine players involved in the final stages of this summer's tournament in Russian Federation - more than any other club - and they only returned to pre-season training on Monday.

Pochettino, speaking after the game, was pleased with how his side had fared and added they would improve once they get back into their groove.

"I am quite happy with the performance of the players and the way that we approached the game", Benitez said.

"There were a lot of positives to see the team fighting".

"It was important for us to provide good balance to the team, try to assess the squad, the possibility that we had to play".

More news: Why has Turkey's currency fallen so sharply?

Kane has now played nearly 1,000 minutes of Premier League football in August, leading many to question why anyone would select Kane before September rolls around.

Some players will be 100 per cent in a few weeks, others maybe two months.

"I think we deserved more", he told BBC Sport. They created some chances to score more than one.

"Of course the circumstances are completely different, and the profiles of the players are completely different".

"Hugo (Lloris) was standing there in slo-mo and then it hit the bar and it fell the right way for us, so in the end we were a bit lucky". You know me. It's not because they were at the World Cup that they are going to play in the team.

"If individual goals and targets are the priority for them, it's sure that they are not going to help the team and that is why they are going to be out of the squad".

Pochettino's side showed the benefit of familiarity as they hung on against Newcastle and, with a move to the new White Hart Lane on the horizon, the Argentinian tactician took the opportunity to call for a united front.
