Grieving orca still swimming with her dead calf in Northwest

Lummi Tribal Chairman Jay Julius releases this 15-pound wild chinook off the stern of the boat Monday. Lummi fishermen were taking part in a test of a plan to help feed a starving orca in the J pod

"It hasn't been done before so we'll have to quickly licence that and put in place".

The four-year-old female killer whale, known as J50, is emaciated and lethargic, and scientists fear she has only days to live.

Cottrell, who was on the water with the marine mammal crew in Sooke, said he was texting with the Port Renfrew crew and didn't have any details on J50's condition.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada received the proposed rescue plan for its American counterparts on Friday, he said.

The whale is one of just 75 remaining southern resident killer whales.

Scientists and researchers are in a race against time, struggling to save an ailing 3-year-old killer whale named Scarlet which has gone missing.

An adult female, J35, was also with the pod, still carrying her dead calf more than two weeks after the newborn died on July 24.

The U.S. -based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has approval to attempt feeding the whale the medicated salmon but for now that could only take place in U.S. waters.

"We don't know exactly what is wrong with her", Rowles said in a teleconference.

"We do need to be very cognizant of what the effects of the treatment on J50 would be or what the potential adverse affects on her family members would be", she said.

"We are hopeful that there is still a chance that we will be able to assist her with medical treatment to give her enough time to get nourishment and treat infections, if indeed that is causing her decline".

The first step before administering any antibiotics will be to assess J50's condition, once she is located again in appropriate conditions.

In the U.S., biologists have prepared veterinary supplies, and dart and injection guns with antibiotics to rapidly respond when they see the killer whale.

"We want to separate the antibiotic treatment from the fish feeding effort because we do not want her to associate with the fish feeding that she's going to get a shot", Rowles said.

NOAA and the Center for Whale Research cite multiple factors threatening the killer whales, including a diminishing Chinook salmon population - which is their preferred fish - as well as increased pollution, water traffic, and increased noise - which stresses out the whales and interferes their ability to reproduce.

While it's not uncommon for southern resident killer whales to go unsighted for days, researchers were racing the clock to find J-pod because of the young whale's poor health.

She said weather conditions were improving, so they were hoping for another sighting in order to collect fecal and breath samples from J50.

Scientists in both the United States and Canada are hoping they can feed medicated fish to a sick killer whale off Vancouver Island, a process that has approval in the USA but not yet in Canada.
