Google workers nix China search engine

A section of the letter obtained by online tech publication Gizmodo- the emphasis is from the employees

The employees are demanding more transparency so they can understand the moral implications of their work, said the New York Times, which obtained a copy of the letter. But new reports say Google is building a brand new, censored search engine that will allow it to re-enter the Chinese market, where it will be actively abetting the Communist police state.

The project, which agrees with China's censorship demands, is said to be known as Dragonfly. In fact, Google's proposed censored search engine in China represents a development of, not a departure from, its overall trajectory.

When you type a query into Google's search engine, there's the Search button, which leads you to a snippet of information and various link suggestions, as well as a more playful option ("I'm feeling lucky"), a click that will send the user directly to a webpage of Google's choosing.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai told employees on Thursday that the company is working on a censorship called Dragonfly and it is still in an "exploratory" stage, The Intercept reported.

The internal activism presents another obstacle for Google's potential return to China eight years after the company publicly withdrew from the country in protest of censorship and government hacking.

At the same time, he sought to downplay the revelation, saying the company was not "close" to rolling out the product and that Google's expansion in China was "slow-going and complicated".

Fox News has reached out to Google with a request for comment on this story. The search engine would be censored and would not show content that Bejing has banned.

The app will also identify topics and websites that are blocked by China's Great Firewall, according to the documents.

As rumors of the China-based search engine have trickled out in the press, reaction on social media has been negative, with many calling the company's infamous "Don't be evil" motto into question.

Human rights organisations and activists expressed their worry over Google's plans when they were shared earlier this month in USA media reports.

"It's quite ridiculous that in the 21st century one of the most powerful countries in the world denies its citizens access to common knowledge", one user wrote.

The tech titan faced similar employee uproar earlier this year over "Project Maven", a pilot program that planned to use technology to assist Department of Defense surveillance operations. Only about several hundred of them were aware of the project, the report stated.

The letter and Thursday's meeting follow the publication of an open letter in April, signed by over 1,000 employees, demanding that the company end its collaboration with the Pentagon on artificial intelligence systems created to power the U.S. military's drone warfare program.

Well, where is the ethics in this project that Google might be undertaking.
