First Lady's Parents Become US Citizens

Amalija and Viktor Knavs

First lady Melania Trump's parents were sworn in as USA citizens in New York City on Thursday.

Michael Wildes, the attorney for the first lady's parents Viktor and Amalija Knavs, told The New York Times on Thursday that their daughter had sponsored them for a green card, and that they applied for citizenship once they were eligible.

They came and went from the ceremony at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Homeland Security police.

Her spokesperson, Stephanie Grisham, declined to comment. Viktor and Amalija Knavs have been living in the United States on as permanent residents on green cards.

Wildes told reporters in NY that the Knavses received no special treatment due to their relationship with the first family.

As CNN notes, critics have pointed out that President Trump wants to end that type of family-based migration.

The Republican president argues that the system steals jobs from Americans and threatens national security, calling for a merit-based system that preferences more educated, English-speaking professionals.

The Senate defeated several immigration bills in the spring, including one that included the proposals backed by Trump.

Melania Trump, second left, is seen with her son Barron, left, her mother, second from right, and husband Donald Trump at the White House in June.

The president in January proposed ending most family-based immigration and replacing it with a skills-based system. "He and his administration are on a crusade to rid the country of immigrants, particularly immigrants of color". She said the first lady's parents "are not part of the administration and deserve privacy".

The first lady's own immigration path also has been scrutinized.

She settled in NY in 1996, met the future president two years later and became his third wife in 2005. Experts estimate that could cut overall immigration to the U.S. by 40% to 50%, if those green cards are not reallocated to another category.

They raised Melania in the rural industrial town of Sevnica while Slovenia was under Communist rule. The Slovenian immigrants, a former auto dealer and textile factory worker, had been living in the U.S.as permanent residents.
