Finau only just makes cut despite record-equalling birdie blitz

Tony Finau's Round 2 Scorecoard is a Sight to Behold

Phil Mickelson will fail to automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1993 after a 1-over 71 left him 4 over for the PGA Championship and well outside the cut line.

Best of all was making the cut on the number at even-par 140, the lowest score to make a cut in the 60 years of stroke play at the PGA Championship. The 2005 victor of the PGA at Baltusrol had made 21 consecutive cuts prior to that going back to 1995.

The missed cut means Mickelson won't accumulate enough points in the Ryder Cup standings to jump into the top eight to auto qualify. The same goes for Tiger Woods should he not move into the top-eight points list by Sunday.

Mickelson is 18-20-7 in the Ryder Cup, but he played well two years ago at Hazeltine National, when the Americans routed the Europeans 17-11 to win back the cup. Furyk, who also made the cut, will be paired with him again.

Finau was among five players who accompanied Furyk to France this summer for a scouting trip at Le Golf Nacional, the host course of the September 28-30 Ryder Cup matches.

The five-time major victor has also been on every U.S. Presidents Cup team dating to 1994.

Those birdies after his big blunder stood out to Finau, one of only 11 players to make the cut in all four majors this year. He finally made his first par at 10.

"I'm human, " Finau said. He played the rest of his round in 1 under to at least give himself a chance to play the weekend, then went on a tear in the second round. It was still an emotional roller coaster in the second round. Major championship golf is amusing.

"Ten birdies is pretty cool", Furyk said.

"For sure it was the craziest round I think he's ever seen", Finau said afterward.

All told he tallied 10 birdies (tying a PGA Championship record), three bogeys, a triple, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Disappointed after an opening 74, Finau ripped off five birdies in a row to start his second round, made triple bogey on 6, came back with two more birdies and then dropped a shot on 9.

"He was just shaking his head", Finau said after finishing the rain-delayed round Saturday morning with a 4-under 66, a round that featured just four pars.

"It was insane. I'm usually pretty good at making pars and saving pars but that wasn't the case in the second round", Finau said on TNT after his second round.
