Federal Judge Denies CNN Request To Dox Jurors In Manafort Trial

Jury in Paul Manafort trial poses questions about reasonable doubt

The jury in Manafort's trial is in its second day of deliberation, after asking Judge T.S. Ellis to define "reasonable doubt."

On Friday, Ellis denied a motion from media organizations to make public the names of the jurors in the trial, saying he has faced "criticism and threats" and doesn't want the same for jurors.

The court in Alexandria, Virginia, has heard closing arguments and the jury has retired to consider a verdict.

Manafort's trial in federal court is the first stemming from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election. As everyone knows, it is up to the jury to decide whether Manafort is guilty of the bank fraud and tax evasion crimes he is accused of committing. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 10 years in prison. On the first day the jury heard testimony, Trump said Manafort had been treated worse than 1920s gangster Al Capone. Paul Manafort briefly worked for Trump's campaign in 2016. He also questioned the fairness of a special counsel law that has allowed Mueller to commit millions of taxpayer dollars to his investigation.

The jury had three other questions for the judge Thursday before they recessed for the day, including one requesting that they be given a document that matched the prosecution's evidence exhibits to the relevant charges.

Judge T.S. Ellis revealed Friday that he has faced "criticism and threats" as he oversees the first trial in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Ellis said that he was shocked there was so much interest in the case. One charge, for example, is that Manafort hid some of the money he earned from Ukraine in foreign accounts in Cyprus, which he used to pay for $6 million in US real estate purchases as well as other luxuries to support his lavish lifestyle - in an elaborate scheme to avoid paying USA taxes.

Jurors in the trial are not sequestered but have been instructed not to watch news reports or talk to others about the matter.

The jury concluded deliberations around 5:30pm (local time) after receiving Judge Ellis' answers.

Downing told reporters outside the courthouse Friday that Mr. Trump had made a "great comment".
