FBI Fires Peter Strzok, Agent Removed From Russia Investigation Over Trump Texts

FBI fires Strzok after anti Trump texts

- The FBI has fired a longtime agent who once worked on special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation over text messages criticizing President Donald Trump.

Goelman said that the deputy director "departed from established precedent by firing" Strzok.

Goelman is criticizing the move, noting that the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation office that usually handles these matters had originally decided Strzok should face no more than a demotion and 60-day suspension.

"This isn't the normal process in any way more than name", Goelman said.

Strzok acknowledged to the House Judiciary Committee that he had exchanged all the messages with Page that had been discovered by Justice Department investigators but said the First Amendment protected his right to hold those views and denied he had ever let his beliefs affect any of his official actions.

"Text messages of FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok indicated that he, McCabe, and Priestap discussed the Weiner laptop on September 28".

The FBI made no immediate comment about the news on Monday morning.

But when a Justice Department inspector general investigation uncovered politically charged messages that Strzok had exchanged with another FBI official, he was relegated to a position in human resources.

The president also said his firing should mean that the probe into Hillary Clinton's email server - which Strzok oversaw - should be reopened. Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.

Former FBI Director James Comey was sacked by Trump in May 2017 after Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein helped pen a memo that was critical of how Comey handled the FBI's probe into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. When the texts were sent, Trump was running for the Republican nomination. Democrats accused Republicans of trying to divert attention from Mueller's investigation and Trump's ties to Russian Federation by excessively focusing on Strzok.

"This decision should be deeply troubling to all Americans", Goelman said.

Strzok's attorneys called his dismissal "not only a departure from typical bureau practice", but a decision that contradicted earlier commitments by FBI Director Christopher Wray to follow standard process in dealing with its personnel matters. Each was referred to the FBI for possible violations of the bureau's code of conduct.
