European Union set to end switch between summer and winter time - Juncker

The US and EU have agreed to try and create an environment of zero tariffs barriers or subsidies

The EU's pledge to import more soybeans from US farmers was the "dealmaker" in the agreement between European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and US President Donald Trump to stop the dispute and open trade talks, EU sources told EURACTIV.

This would likely mean Belfast and Dublin having the same time - and a different time to London when it falls back to daylight savings time in the winter.

Under the EU's "backstop" proposal for avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland, if such a frontier is not averted by the future EU-UK relationship, Brussels wants Northern Ireland to remain under the rules of its single market. If Washington made a decision to impose tariffs on vehicles after all, he said, "then we will also do that".

'Whatever happened to subsidiarity?

The EU Commission has not yet drafted details of any proposed change.

Outside the EU, a handful of European countries have stopped switching between summer and winter time, including Russia, Turkey, Belarus and Iceland.

Juncker said that it would make no sense to disregard people's wishes, indicating the European Commission proposal would go in that direction.

Since 1996, the European Union nations have moved the clock forward by one hour in March and backward again in October.

Any change, however, would still need approval from the European Commission, the EU's top executive body, the EU Parliament and the governments of 28-member states to become law.

But Finland, with the most northerly European Union national capital, this year called for the European Union to halt the practice, which critics say it can cause long-term health problems, especially among young children and elderly people.

Research shows that the time change messes up people's sleep schedules and can negatively impact workplace productively, though supporters of the practice say the extra light can reduce road accidents and save energy, according to Reuters.
