England vs India, second Test, day four

India vs England 2nd Test Day 2:James Anderson picked up his 26th Test five-wicket haul

Bairstow looked set to follow Woakes to his hundred before he edged a flat-footed drive at Hardik Pandya behind.

Seven balls later Alastair Cook joined Jennings back in the hut.

Woakes surged past Bairstow and was suddenly in sight of securing a place on the batting honors board at Lord's - to go along with his place on the bowling honors board after taking two five-wicket hauls at Lord's against Pakistan two years ago.

The only sadness for England was that Bairstow did not reach three figures as well. We just tried to fight and score as many runs as we could.

The all-rounder had a clear plan as he walked out to the crease.

"It would've been nice to have had a little bit more red-ball cricket under my belt (before the Test) but I definitely felt I was ready from the mental side of things if called upon". It was a matter of getting through the first 25-30 balls, and trying to get used to the wicket and conditions.

"Obviously, I've had a couple of good games here in the past". "It was nervy in the 90s". I hope they go for the former. "I didn´t have that (a Test century) on my radar at the start of the day". Before then it hadn't really crossed my mind. "That feeling of raising your bat to a standing ovation at Lord's is a bit of a boyhood dream".

After rain washed out the first day's play and interrupted much of day two, bad light brought proceedings to a close with England in a commanding lead.

The hosts moved to 28-0 in the morning session before opener Keaton Jennings was caught on the crease and trapped LBW by Mohammed Shami.

Joe Root (19) had battled through a hard spell when he first came to the crease and was set to be rewarded with more favourable conditions in the afternoon, only to be undone by Shami with a ball that nipped back and stayed low in the final over of the morning.

And to what became the last ball before lunch, England captain Joe Root was lbw for 19 to an off-cutter from Shami, who also had Jos Buttler (24) leg before in a stumps return of three for 74 in 19 overs.

Woakes was 120 not out, having shared a partnership of 189 with Jonny Bairstow (93) that was an England record for the sixth wicket in Test matches against India, beating the 171 put on by Ian Botham and Bob Taylor at Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1980.
