England v India: second Test, day two

India's Cheteshwar Pujara left and head coach Ravi Shastri talk during a nets session at Edgbaston a day ahead of the 1st test cricket match between England and India

Here are seven things to look forward to on Day 3 of the second Test between India and England at Lord's.

Jonny Bairstow of England bats.

Even Kohli failed to make an impact, scoring just 23 runs.

This was a day in three parts - all interspersed by showers - with the first dominated by Anderson, the second by a horrendous run-out of Cheteshwar Pujara and the third by Woakes and Anderson again.

Kohli, who was looking all at sea against Woakes, finally fell to the right-armer in his third over, with Jos Buttler making no mistake this time at second slip.

That easy wicket for England left India at 3/15.

Credit for the latter should at least partially be assigned to Woakes, he defended well, played strongly on the drive through the offside and looked more than a match for anything India had to offer - as if mild-mannerly showing the world that the nine first class centuries he has for Warwickshire were not acquired by accident.

Chris Woakes gave Bairstow fine support as England stretched their lead.

With the sun shining it looked like ideal batting conditions, but the rare rainfall of the previous two days in London still gave the India attack hope they could bowl their side back into he match.

But it was new-ball partner Mohammed Shami who made the breakthrough when Keaton Jennings (11) was lbw playing across the line. With the partnership appearing to take the game away from India, Hardik struck at a vital juncture in the game trapping Pope (28) plumb in front. As first innings go in Test cricket it was a good one.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (29) then joined Rahane in the middle to add 22 runs for the seventh wicket before the old warhorse James Anderson came back to add more misery to the visitors with the dismissal of the Mumbai batsman.

Pope's wicket left the hosts on 77 for three, with two experience batsmen at the crease in Root and Jonny Bairstow.

However, Woakes (120no) and Bairstow (93) batted them out of contention either side of tea and, after day one and much of day two were washed out and more rain forecast for Sunday and Monday, the weather may provide India with their best chance of escaping with a draw.
