Egypt: Defrocked monk charged with killing Coptic bishop

Egyptian police gather on a bridge over the Nile where a suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt after being denied entry to a Coptic Christian church

Epiphanius' body was found with head injuries in late July lying in a corridor of the monastery, according to the church.

The killing last month of Bishop Epiphanius, a 64-year-old scholar who had led the Abu Makar Monastery in Wadi Natroun, prompted the church to impose strict new measures on its clergy.

According to Al-Ahram, the suicide bomber attempted to enter the Virgin Mary Church in the town that is located north of Cairo.

An Egyptian Coptic monk has been detained on suspicion of killing a bishop at a desert monastery, his lawyer said Saturday.

The decision by the Alexandria appeals prosecution today comes almost a week after the Coptic Orthodox Church defrocked monk Isaiah El-Makary as an investigation by the monastic affairs committee of the Holy Synod, the highest decision-making body in the church, showed he had committed actions unbecoming of a monk.

Earlier this month the church announced a dozen measures related to monks' activities after a meeting called "to discuss monastic order in light of the painful incident and martyrdom of Bishop Epiphanius", a church statement said.

Tawadros II and other clerics have since closed down their social media accounts.

His funeral was attended by Pope Tawadros II, the spiritual leader of Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Christians, one the world's oldest Christian communities.

Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's predominantly Sunni Muslim population of some 100 million.
