Butlin's guest records targeted by hackers

Butlin's suffers data breach after falling victim to phishing attack

Holiday camp chain Butlin's has suffered a data breach, with the personal information of as many as 34,000 of its guests being stolen by hackers over the last three days, the company said on Friday.

However, the booking reference numbers, lead guest names, holiday arrival dates, postal and email addresses and telephone numbers in 34,000 guest records may have been breached, Butlin's warned.

A spokesperson confirmed to Sky News that the compromise had taken place over the past 72 hours, and was believed to be caused by a phishing email.

"Butlin's take the security of our guest data very seriously and have improved our security processes".

The firm is now contacting people who may have been affected to inform them and tell them what they should do.

Butlin's insisted that "no financial data has been compromised".
