Brennan blasts Trump's no collusion claims as 'hogwash'

Ex-CIA director's security clearance revoked

Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime, Mr Brennan said the move was "designed to punish me for my public criticism of Mr Trump".

The press secretary insisted that this wasn't a dictatorial attempt to silence a critic, but rather in the interest of national security because Brennan has a blabbermouth.

"I call it the rigged witch hunt", Trump said of the Russian Federation probe.

Brennan says he hasn't been contacted by anyone in the government informing him of the decision and learned about the news on television. And these people led it.

"There needs to be an official determination made about this, and that, I think, can only be done by the Mueller investigation", Clapper told CNN on Thursday.

"I have witnessed this type of behaviour through the course of my intelligence career, in terms of what the foreign tyrants, and despots and dictators would do, and Mr Trump is following that play book quite closely", he said. The original statement released by the White House on Wednesday included a date of July 26, although aides said that was an error.

Democrats are lining up to denounce President Donald Trump's decision to revoke the security clearance of former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan.

All are critics of the president or are people whom Trump appears to believe are against him.

Democrats, and even some Republicans, lined up to denounce the president's move, with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democrat from California., slamming it as a "stunning abuse of power".

He has previously described as "treasonous" the joint press conference Mr Trump held with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Finland last month. And California's Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee, tweeted, "An enemies list is ugly, undemocratic and un-American".

The White House is also reviewing the security clearance of other former officials who have been critical of the president, including former national intelligence director James Clapper, former national security agency director Michael Hayden, and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

They include former FBI Director James Comey; James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence; former CIA Director Michael Hayden; former national security adviser Susan Rice; and Andrew McCabe, who served as Trump's deputy FBI director until he was sacked in March.
