Blue light emitted from smartphones and laptops accelerates blindness

Blue Light From Your Phones and Laptops May Be Ruining Your Eyes New Study Reveals

The study discovered that age-related macular degeneration occurs when the body's immune system is less able to protect itself against this combination of retinal and blue light.

The light waves of blue color in everyday life reflections from the computer monitors, smartphones and led lamps.

You may have heard that blue light that emits from phones and other electronics can disrupt your regular sleep patterns. 'Photoreceptor cells do not regenerate in the eye. Blue light from digital devices and the sun transforms vital molecules in the eye's retina into cell killers, according to optical chemistry research at The University of Toledo.

For the study, researchers examined what would happen to retinal, a molecule in the eye that's crucial for a person's vision, if they exposed it to the same blue light that is often present in electronic screens. For their study, the researchers chose to target retinal molecules that photoreceptor cells need in order to sense light and send signals to the brain.

"We are being exposed to blue light continuously, and the eye's cornea and lens can not block or reflect it", said Ajith Karunarathne, Assistant Professor, University of Toledo in Ohio, US.

That's the warning being offered up by researchers from the U.S. who found that prolonged exposure to blue light can lead to the generation of poisonous molecules in the eye's light-sensitive cells. "When they're dead, they're dead for good", said Karunarathne.

Macular degeneration, which affects around 2.4% of the adult population in the United Kingdom, is a common condition among those in their 50s and 60s that results in significant vision loss. Because of this, in the cytoplasm, sharply increasing the concentration of calcium, which can eventually lead to cell death. Without the retinal, blue light had no effect on the other types of cell. When combined with neurons and cancer cells, retinal that had been exposed to blue light killed them all - suggesting it could do the same to those found in the human eye. "By learning more about the mechanisms of blindness in search of a method to intercept toxic reactions caused by the combination of retinal and blue light, we hope to find a way to protect the vision of children growing up in a high-tech world". Retinal without blue light or blue light without retinal could not kill the cells.

Dr. Karunarathne urged anyone concerned to wear sunglasses that filter UV and blue light and to avoid browsing on digital devices in the dark. Any medicine would appear to help or delay macular degeneration, a condition that sees about 2 million new cases reported per year.
