BCMVCD: West Nile Virus "Out of Control"

The West Nile virus can cause symptoms similar to those of the flu but in extreme cases it can result in tremors fever comas and a lethal swelling of the brain tissue known as encephalitis

The risk of West Nile virus infection is at a level not seen since 2012 when an outbreak infected 290 IL residents, the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District announced Thursday.

Cases of the disease have been confirmed in 36 states including California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina and Texas, according to the CDC.

The Health Department said the public can assist in identifying areas with water which could become potential breeding sites for the mosquitos, which lay their eggs in water.

Mosquito pools in every county in New Jersey except for Passaic have tested positive for the virus.

This year, West Nile has not yet been found in a Wisconsin resident.

The Clark County Health Department says routine mosquito sampling by the state found West Nile in Jeffersonville. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that one in 150 people infected develop a serious illness that affects the central nervous system.

People who contract West Nile virus may show mild signs of illness including fever, headache and body aches.

Last year, there were 91 deaths out of the more than 1,000 cases that were reported across the US.

August and September are traditionally the peak times for virus transmission of the mosquitoborne virus. The health department will also continue spraying pesticides until this year's first "freezing" temperatures.
