At The Bell: Canada’s Unemployment Rate At Fourty Year Low

'Another head scratcher': Canada adds 54100 jobs in July

That's still down from the 47,200 that were unemployed in the region in July 2017.

The report looked set to boost market speculation that the Bank of Canada, which has raised rates four times over the previous year as the economy strengthened, could hike again next month.

The Canadian economy unexpectedly added 54,100 jobs in July on strength in part-time hiring and the unemployment rate dipped to equal a record low 5.8 percent, Statistics Canada data reported on Friday.

The city saw its unemployment percentage increase from 5.8 per cent in June to 6 per cent in July. These gains were largely attributed to an overall growth in the number of part time jobs available.

Nationally, employment rose by 54,000 in July, mostly due to increased part-time work.

The country gained 82,000 less desirable, part-time positions last month - and it lost 28,000 full-time jobs.

Calgary's rate increased slightly from 7.7 per cent to 7.9 per cent.

"The labour market remains robust and there is easily enough here to convince the Bank of Canada to maintain its gradual tightening campaign - there's just not enough to get it to accelerate the schedule", BMO chief economist Doug Porter said in a note to investors.

Employment in the key public administration sector, which includes the federal government, saw big gains between June and July.

Compared with a year earlier, overall employment was up 1.3 per cent following the addition of 245,900 jobs for an increase driven by 210,500 new full-time positions.

July's unemployment rate marked a minimal increase to what has been the lowest unemployment rate in at least 31 years and suggests that the region's economy is continuing to hold strong and finally recovering from the effects of the 2008-2009 recession.
