Amazon Prime members no longer get ad-free Twitch privileges

Amazon Prime

For Amazon Prime members, picking up a game through Amazon turned a $60 purchase into a $48 purchase.

In addition to cutting back the new game discount, Amazon has also eliminated the Twitch Prime benefit of "Ad-Free Viewing Experience Across Twitch", which no longer appears on the Twitch Prime benefits page as of an update this morning. The shipping giant announced today that the service's 20 percent discount on pre-ordering games is going away on August 28th.

Twitch Prime is letting the ads flood in. Should viewers simply want to skip a single channel's ads, they can pay that channel's monthly subscription cost, though this varies on a channel-by-channel basis.

"Advertising is an important source of support for the creators who make Twitch possible", the company said in a blog post announcing the move. "This change will strengthen and expand that advertising opportunity for creators so they can get more support from their viewers for doing what they love".

Twitch Prime, a service the streaming video site offers in partnership with its parent company Amazon, will no longer be ad-free for new members starting September 14. Luckily though, Amazon is once again following Best Buy's lead and will begin offering a $10 promo credit with the purchase of select video games beginning August 28.

Amazon is continuously updating Prime memberships with new features and bonus offers, and there have been a few nice ones which are great for gamers, like Twitch Prime which offers free PC games to members every month. This new pre-order benefit is replacing the current discount on physical game pre-orders. Prime members, The Verge notes, will get store credit as an incentive to pre-order video games through Amazon, "marking a major change to one of the membership's best benefits".
