Activists Met With Tense Confrontation On Charlottesville Anniversary

White nationalists participate in a torch-lit march on the grounds of the University of Virginia ahead of the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville Virginia

He called for the nation to "come together" after a week in which he stoked racial divisions with attacks on black athletes and other minorities.

"I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence, ' and critics have slammed the wording, saying it was just an offshoot of blaming 'both sides", Trump wrote on Twitter.

One year after the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, US President Donald Trump tweeted a condemnation of racism Saturday, calling for unity and "peace to ALL Americans".

Exactly one year after the original rally, "Unite the Right 2"-titled like a bad Hollywood sequel-will be held in a park near the White House".

Dozens of groups, including the local chapter of Black Lives Matter, will counterprotest in Freedom Plaza.

US President Donald Trump has acknowledged the anniversary of a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville that turned deadly past year.

"These are intentional acts, even though people may not see the rhyme or reason to it", Malone said.

"We have people coming to our city for the sole goal of spewing hate", Bowser added. "We denounce hate. We denounce anti-Semitism, and we denounce the rhetoric we expect to hear this Sunday". Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Peter Newsham have promised a massive security mobilization to keep protesters and counter-protesters apart.

A group of anti-fascist protesters, sometimes known as "Antifa", marched in the afternoon, carrying signs with messages like "Good Night White Pride".

On Wednesday, Gov. Ralph Northam and the city both declared states of emergency, citing the "potential impacts of events" in Charlottesville during the anniversary weekend.

In addition, they will enforce a state law that prohibits wearing masks in certain places.

The "Unite the Right" rally in a Charlottesville park was organized in 2017 by white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups to protest plans to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate States Army during the U.S. Civil War.

As the group and other counter-protestors head for the nation's capital, Hogan has instructed Maryland State agencies to be ready to respond and to coordinate in advance with DC officials. The conflict culminated in the death of Heather Heyer, 32, when James Alex Fields Jr., whose social media accounts included posts espousing white supremacy, purposely drove his vehicle into a crowd of counterprotesters.

On Saturday in Charlottesville, the downtown area was virtually locked down, with more than 700 officers on hand to ensure there would be no violence.

Other events were also planned throughout the weekend, including on Sunday, the anniversary of the violence that erupted on the streets of Charlottesville.

Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) commemorated Heather Heyer, the woman killed protesting the rally, and two state troopers killed when their helicopter crashed during the law enforcement response to the violence.

Event: The rally will start in Lafayette Park in Washington, D.C., and run from August 11 to 12.

Chanting "The people united will never be defeated", hundreds rallied at the University of Virginia on Saturday, an effort they say was meant to demand justice over racism.
