21-year-old receives historic face transplant

Woman, 21, Gets Full Face Transplant After Shooting Face Off In Suicide Attempt — Pics

"This surgery can give her back the self-esteem and confidence she lost".

Prior to this life-changing surgery, Ms. Stubblefield's story was told in a National Geographic documentary and made it as their magazine's September cover story, titled Story of a Face. The Mississippi native has one of the most incredible stories we've ever heard!

Katie Stubblefield was just 18 when she put the barrel of her brother's.308-caliber hunting rifle below her chin and pulled the trigger. The world's fist successful face transplant was conducted at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital in Spain in 2010.

But after 22 operations and her final face transplant she has chose to spread her message to help others suffering with suicidal thoughts.

The face transplant (pictured) took place in 2017 at the Cleveland Clinic, the same clinic that performed the United States' first face transplant on Connie Culp in 2008. The only problem? This posed a greater risk of Katie's body rejecting the new face. Katie Stubblefield, 17, 8 months before attempting suicide.

Detailing the procedure in an article on its website, the clinic said the surgery included: "Transplantation of the scalp, the forehead, upper and lower eyelids, eye sockets, nose, upper cheeks, upper jaw and half of lower jaw, upper teeth, lower teeth, partial facial nerves, facial muscles, and skin - with 100 per cent of her facial tissue effectively replaced".

Before all of this could be done, Katie had a long journey of hospital visits.

Ms Bennington, made the emotional choice to donate her grand daughter's face after meeting with Ms Stubblefield and her parents. She said, "They weren't going to wait for me, and why should they?"

"I never thought of doing that ever before, and so on hearing about it, I just didn't know how to handle it", she told National Geographic. She is the 40thperson in the world known to have received a new face.

Stubblefield will remain a lifelong subject in the study of a still experimental procedure.

"I had no clue what a face transplant was", Katie said.

"I am able to touch my face now, and it feels fantastic", Ms Stubblefield told the NY Post.

In her senior year, she had her appendix and her gallbladder taken out as she continued to battle with digestive issues. In the time since receiving her full-face transplant - joining the ranks of fewer than 25 such recipients worldwide - at the Cleveland Clinic, Katie has undergone three major revision surgeries and has been hard at work with physical, occupational, and speech therapy. "Now I want to help other people", she said. And now Katie has a mission in her life.

It was paid for by the US Department of Defence through the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine. "I am able to touch my face now, and it feels wonderful", Katie said in the video.

Katie now hopes to attend college and have a family and career one day, the page added.
