YouTube announces new features to improve its news experience

Google wants you to turn to You Tube for breaking news

The Google-owned online video service said it would offer funding "across approximately 20 global markets to support news organizations in building sustainable video operations". YouTube says the grants "will enable our partners to build key capabilities, train staff on video best practices, enhance production facilities and develop formats optimized for online video".

For longer-lasting hoaxes, such as the claim that the moon landings were fake, YouTube will on Tuesday launch a previously announced programme to link to authoritative sources, such as Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica, under videos on those topics.

Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan said the company isn't just compiling a simple list of trusted news outlets, noted that the definition of authoritative is "fluid" and then added the caveat that it won't simply boil down to sources that are popular on YouTube.

At such times, YouTube will begin showing users short text previews of news stories in video search results, as well as warnings that the stories can change. YouTube will also add more members to its team that supports news publishers.

Company executives announced the effort at YouTube's NY offices. In March, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki promised new features to make YouTube a more reliable source of information during a South by Southwest panel, stating that "this has been a year of fake news and misinformation and we have seen the importance of delivering information to our users accurately".

The YouTube effort comes as Google and Facebook - companies that drew heavy criticism following the 2016 U.S. election for failing to prevent the propagation of false news - have been taking a series of steps to promote verifiable journalism. "So far, local news has seen strong engagement, and we will be expanding it to dozens more markets like Cincinnati, Las Vegas and Kansas City", the YouTube execs wrote.

At a press event in NY, the world's biggest video website outlined a number of improvements and investments, all created to show that it is an ally of news publishers.

YouTube announced today that it is working to improve the news experience for its subscribers.

"It's very easy to quickly produce and upload low-quality videos spreading misinformation around a developing news event", he said. These sections now appear in 17 countries, including the USA, U.K., France, Italy, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, and Nigeria, and Google aims to double that number in the coming months. In the coming months, Google plans to double the number of countries where these highlights are available.
