What You Need to Know About Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s Supreme Court Pick

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh with US President Donald

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh incurred tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt buying baseball tickets over the past decade and at times reported liabilities that could have exceeded the value of his cash accounts and investment assets, according to a review of Kavanaugh's financial disclosures and information provided by the White House.

Kavenaugh is meeting with senators to ask for their support.

Brett Kavanaugh will be under the microscope for the foreseeable future after President Donald Trump nominated the Federal circuit judge to replace justice Anthony Kennedy on the United States Supreme Court.

When Trump finally tapped Neil Gorsuch to fill the vacancy, McConnell resorted to changing procedural rules so he could be approved by a simple majority instead of the traditional 60-40 threshold. It's a Supreme Court justice, this is a lifetime job.

But perhaps more important than all of those issues, at least from a confirmation prospects perspective: Republican Sens.

"Obviously the more there is, the more opportunities there are to highlight why he's problematic", one senior Democratic aide said, adding that given it's a lifetime appointment, Democrats should have access to everything that exists.

"I have Trump nomination BINGO!" he exclaimed. Given Kavanaugh has been a reliably conservative judge, this could be a source of friction for Manchin.

Before he was a judge, he ran an investigation into the death of a deputy adviser to President Bill Clinton. But that vote will likely take place before the November elections!

That line of thinking would be useful to Trump, who is unlikely to face impeachment so long as Republicans control Congress.

Both of Michigan's U.S. Senators - Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow - are Democrats, and both said they have serious concerns with Kavanaugh's nomination.

Referencing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's successful push to hold off the Supreme Court confirmation until after the 2016 election, Peters said McConnell is "not being consistent with his views" and should give senators adequate time to consider the nomination before the midterm elections this fall.

However, Brewer said she does not think McCain will make it back to the Senate in order to vote on the Kavanaugh confirmation. But three "Trump state" Democratic senators are facing tough re-election battles (Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, and Joe Donnelly of Indiana) and are feeling pressure from their constituents to vote for Kavanaugh.

Like many judges, he's often dodged on Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case affirming the right to privacy and access to abortion.

Ingraham pointed out that prominent Democrats like Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.), Sen.

"I don't think that's going to happen", she said.

Other Democrats are anxious about Kavanaugh's written opinion that a President should not face legal action for a crime while in office.

Mueller is looking into any links between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 electoral campaign, as well as possible obstruction of justice. "Whoever President Trump put up they were opposed to".

The ease of Supreme Court confirmations depends, in part, on electoral politics in the Senate.

Knowing full well what the Democrats attack points would be, Kavanaugh talked about the importance of women in his life and the lessons he learned on the importance of equality from his mother, as she, his father, his wife and his two young daughters looked on. "This is unfortunate", Jonathan Adler, a professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, wrote in an email.

The GOP leadership in the Senate hopes to complete the confirmation process in time for the high court's next session that starts October 1.
