West Nile concerns arrive with summer

Groups of positive mosquitoes, known as a "mosquito pool", collected in the areas of Honcut, Palermo, and Dayton have tested positive with the West Nile virus.

MS had 63 cases and two deaths in 2017.

Previous year was the most active season for West Nile since 2002, with one person testing positive for the virus in Oxford County. Mosquitoes can be active at any time but are most active in the evening and throughout the night.

People can best protect themselves by using a mosquito repellent containing DEET and by wearing long sleeves and long trousers if going into mosquito-infested areas.

Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.

The New Jersey Department of Health reported that there have been eight samples across five states that have tested positive, but that as of June 9 no reports of any human cases. This is also called West Nile encephalitis or meningitis.

The virus is carried by infected mosquitoes and can be transmitted to animals, birds and humans. Due to the high mortality rate of horses that contract the disease, owners are encouraged to make sure their horses are kept current with their West Nile virus vaccinations. The 2018 larviciding program will continue throughout the summer season, along with the investigation of standing water complaints and the distribution of educational materials.

Old tires are a flawless breeding site for mosquitoes and should be discarded.
