Week-old baby killed, dozens injured after tornado hits North Dakota city

National Weather Service confirms North Dakota city struck by tornado

McKenzie County Sheriff Gary Schwartzenberger said he lives on a hill overlooking the park and he didn't hear the sirens.

The National Weather Service classified the tornado as an EF2 with wind speeds reaching 127 miles per hour.

A crowdfunding campaign has raised more than $13,000 for a couple who lost their week-old baby when a tornado hit a North Dakota town.

Ken Simosko, National Weather Service meteorologist in Bismarck, said a severe thunderstorm warning with the possibility of a tornado was issued about 60 minutes in advance of the storm.

"My dog was with me and the next thing you knew the storm picked up my camper and slammed it on the ground".

A male baby was severely injured when the storm hit his family's home and later died in hospital, the McKenzie County Sheriff's Office said in a statement late on Tuesday. The storm demolished more than 100 recreational vehicles and other structures in an RV park.

Residents were being allowed into the park Tuesday afternoon. In addition to those structures, there were 79 with moderate damage and 120 with minor to no damage.

The three are missionaries helping the Red Cross by going through the wreckage trying to retrieve valuables for homeowners.

Schwartzenberger says his house half a mile from the RV park suffered siding, shingle and hail damage. Cleanup operations were scheduled to resume Wednesday.

"It's a tornado scene", Schwartzenberger said.

Schwartzenberger said there are numerous shelters in the city, some of them within minutes of the RV park.

Clifford Bowden says he's among those who escaped injury when a violent storm moved through the northwestern North Dakota community of Watford City and hurt at least 28 people, including many at his RV park. He has been staying along with dozens of others at the Watford City Civic Center where the Red Cross has established a shelter. Nine of those are in critical condition, he said.
