Want to Look Rich and Smart? Buy an iPhone

Just by looking at her with an iPad tells you there's a good chance she's well off

That's according to a new paper from University of Chicago economists Marianne Bertrand and Emir Kamenica, reports Business Insider.

In the United States, if you have an Apple iPhone or iPad, it's a strong sign that you make a lot of money.

The research says the iPhone being correlated with high income is just a recent trend.

In the 2016 study, researchers were able to guess if a person belonged to a household with an income within the top quarter of the population, be it a single adult or two parents and dependents, simply by the subject's disclosure that they own a non-specific iPhone about 69 percent of the time. After all, iPhones were only introduced in 2007. The research was conducted on 6,394 people using data from 2016.

It seems that owning an iPad back in 2016 was also a good indicator of wealth, though at 66.9 percent, it wasn't as fancy as owning an iPhone. The fourth-best brand indicator was if someone used Kikkoman soy sauce-a sign of wealth since 1992, when using Grey Poupon Dijon mustard was the number one indication you had plenty of cash. The data included bi-annual questionnaires and information obtained from face-to-face interviews such as household income. The economists used a machine learning algorithm to conclude that "cultural differences", or how common brands and experiences are across groups, aren't getting larger over time.

The study (which you can read here) by the research group the National Bureau Of Economic Research found that 69.1 per cent of iPhone users are in the top income bracket in the US.

"This take-away runs against the popular narrative of the USA becoming an increasingly divided society", the researchers write. In 1992, some of the top brands that were associated with wealth in the USA, in no particular order, were Grey Poupon Dijon mustard, Kodak cameras, Kikkoman soy sauce, and Philadelphia Cream Cheese.
