Vettel wins British Grand Prix ahead of Hamilton

British Grand Prix: F1 – live!

Hamilton ended up finishing second but with Sebastian Vettel winning, he has now extended his championship lead to eight points.

There was no stopping the four-time champion as he seized the lead at the start of the race and fought back after losing the initiative during two safety auto periods to register his second win at Silverstone and the 51st of his career.

Bottas pit a lap later and Mercedes got Hamilton to release him with a cleanly-orchestrated position-swap at Brooklands the following lap, and the Finn started to nibble further into Vettel's lead.

'I was a bit concerned going into the race but we managed to loosen it up a bit and I was fine, probably a bit of adrenaline helped.

"The safety auto spiced it up", said Vettel, wearing supporting tapes on his stiff neck.

When Hamilton and Mercedes' comments were put to Vettel and Raikkonen in the post-race press conference, the duo ruled out any malice.

While Raikkonen was handed a 10-second time penalty for the incident, Hamilton immediately set about climbing back through the field as the contact had left him with minimal - if any - damage.

Both spun and rejoined, Hamilton after running off track.

"All I'd say is that it's now two races that the Ferraris have taken out one of the Mercedes, and a five-second penalty and a 10-second penalty doesn't appear to feel.", he hesitated. "I guess I wanted to give a boost to England", he said.

"There is no way I can compete with new tyres", he said.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff also wondered whether the incident, that sent Hamilton into a spin before he fought back to second at the finish, had been deliberate or simply a sign of incompetence.

The race was neutralised again moments later for an accident at Copse between Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean, when Sainz attacked on the outside but Grosjean suffered a wobble at the apex. Bottas, still on medium tires, was soon struggling, and Ferrari was celebrating when Raikkonen went past to go third. Vettel pitted from the lead, but Bottas stayed out, to lead on lap 34, as did Hamilton.

Daniel Ricciardo came home fifth for Red Bull ahead of Nico Hulkenberg of Renault, Esteban Ocon of Force India, Fernando Alonso of McLaren and Kevin Magnussen of Haas.

"This is the greatest race of the year and this is the greatest crowd, and I am sorry that I want able to bring it home for you today but thank you so much for all your support", the Brit continued.
