US 'working very closely' with Thailand to rescue children

Four boys were rescued on Sunday.

The Tesla CEO has designed an escape pod as he lends a hand to the complex rescue effort. The rescued boys are still being held in quarantine for testing and have not been able to have direct contact with their parents yet.

Expert divers managed to get four of the 12 boys to safety on Sunday.

The area outside the Chiang Rai hospital was cordoned off by police. Officials said that four of the schoolboys were rescued over the weekend.

The mission to save all the trapped is a race against the clock with heavy rain expected this week which would again flood the tunnels with fast-flowing, rising water.

Doctors are monitoring them for any illnesses they may have picked up in the cave, and supervising efforts to build up their strength after they spent more than two weeks with little food and no natural light.

Plans called for the healthiest boys to be rescued first, and Narongsak has repeatedly said the overall health of the boys was good.

"Hopefully useful", said Musk.

The Thai community in Central Texas is keeping a close watch on the Cave Rescue Operation.

Mr Narongsak said two divers would escort each of the boys out of the cave. Their condition was not immediately clear.

The operation began at 10 a.m.

The third boy emerged from the cave at about 19:40 local time, tightly followed by the fourth one. The first group will have four boys and group two, three, and four will have three. They guide the boys through the passageways and carry their air supply.

Eight boys are still inside the cave and along with the team coach.

They spent nine days unaccounted for inside the cave, before British divers found the emaciated and dishevelled group huddling on a muddy bank. He said officials were meeting Monday morning about conducting the next stage of the operation.

Falling oxygen levels and the fact that many boys can not swim well present further risks as they are guided slowly through pitch-black waters. "Based on the complexity and difficulty of the cave environment it is unknown how long it might take and how many children would exit the cave".

The rescue of the initial batch of boys was a stunning victory in an operation Mr Narongsak had earlier dubbed "Mission Impossible" and led to cautious optimism that the others would also be saved. Previously, the entire round trip through the cave network was thought to take about 11 hours. "If that's the case, then we have to reassess the situation", he said.

The staff of the emergency services in Thailand was pulled from the caves of Tham Luang young players of the football team.

Thailand's rainy season began on May 26 but the cave where the boys are trapped is located in the country's north, which gets much less rain than the south. Gen. Chalongchai Chaiyakam said.

"There are two obstacles, which are water and time", Narongsak said.

Officials said at a news conference that the parents of the rescued boys, whose names have not been released, have not yet been allowed to have physical contact with them, pending more extensive examination of their physical condition.

"This mission was successful because we had power".

Narongsak Osottanakorn, who is in charge of the rescue mission, said Saturday conditions were now "perfect", BBC News reports.

Engineers have been diverting the water flow into the cave over the past week and pumping it out at a rate of 180,000 litres an hour in an attempt to make it easier for the boys to escape and reduce the amount of time they must spend underwater. The second boy came out 10 minutes later.

None of the boys have scuba diving experience and experts have warned they could easily panic while swimming underwater in darkness.

The path out is considered especially complicated because of twists and turns in narrow, flooded passageways.

Trapped for two weeks: A massive rescue operation was launched after the boys, ages 11-16, and their coach went missing on June 23. It was raining Sunday, but Narongsak was optimistic that the rescue could continue Monday. A former Thai navy SEAL passed out while making the dive Friday and died.
