UK's May names new foreign secretary

Theresa May and David Davis

Boris Johnson followed Davis in resigning as foreign secretary a day later, plunging the government into more of a mess than it was in already.

The ambitious environment secretary remains in government and appears eager to prove his loyalty to Theresa May, at least judging by his appearance on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show where he said "in all the important areas" the United Kingdom would be a sovereign country under May's Brexit plan.

Brexit secretary David Davis quit on Sunday following crunch talks at Chequers, saying the agreed trade position for the white paper meant "we are giving too much away too easily and that's a risky strategy at this time".

Earlier staunch Brexiteer Dominic Raab was named as Mr Davis's replacement as Secretary of State for Leaving the EU.

In doing so, the Gibraltar Government noted that Mr Johnson and Mr Davis have both been strong supporters of Gibraltar in Government and outside it.

Britain will not hold a referendum on the final deal to leave the European Union or seek to delay its exit date, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Monday, after two ministerial resignations put her Brexit plan at risk.

"He's been very, very nice to me, very supportive", Trump said.

"The trouble is that I have practised the words over the weekend and I find they stick in the throat".

"We must have collective responsibility".

He added: "Since I can not in all conscience champion these proposals, I have sadly concluded that I must go".

Tory Brexiteers say the proposals agreed at Friday's meeting of the Cabinet at Chequers are "Brexit in name only".

"We had a good relationship with him (Mr Johnson), (foreign minister) Julie Bishop in particular".

"I like Theresa May, I think she's a good prime minister", Davis said.

- What if Mrs May refuses to stand aside?

"It is a proposal that will take back control of our borders, our money and our laws".

Party rules dictate that 48 Tory MPs - 15% of those in Parliament - must sign letters of no confidence to trigger a vote, but that number has not yet materialised.

Asked whether May would contest a no-confidence vote, a Downing Street source said simply: "Yes".

Senior backbencher Bernard Jenkin said there had been a "massive haemorrhage of trust" in Mrs May.

On Monday, her office attempted to woo lawmakers from the opposition Labour Party, a move that outraged dissident Conservatives, who are prepared to vote to block her plan if it comes to the House of Commons unchanged later in the year.

May's proposals for a future European Union relationship after Britain departs from the bloc next March had taken two years of internal government wrangling to agree, but within 48 hours Johnson and Davis had resigned saying they could not back the plans.

The unit at Porton Down later told Sky News that it was not yet able to establish where the substance used to target the Skripals had been made.

Johnson quit with a resignation letter accusing May of flying "white flags" of surrender in negotiations with the European Union.

Many took the opportunity to make fun of the former Brexit Secretary over his short tenure and the timing of his decision to quit.
