Trump's London stay met by protesters

Donald Trump UK visit

US President Donald Trump blasted British Prime Minister Theresa May, said her recently resigned foreign minister would make a great replacement and criticized the mayor of London as being "bad on terror", in comments published as he made his first trip to the UK Thursday.

"If they do that, then their trade deal with the USA will probably not be made".

The comments, following on from the morning press conference, will be a cause of great concern for Mrs May.

Sarah Elliott, chairwoman of Republicans Overseas UK, told CNN she did not think Trump would be fazed by the stunt.

May will reportedly use the dinner to discuss a trade deal with the USA ahead of Brexit, as well as security and the Middle East.

"It's typical, but honestly Donald Trump's legacy will outlive any big orange balloon and the matters that will be discussed at Chequers and now in Brussels are much more important and will have a much longer effect than any day rally", she said. "I'm very strong on immigration".

Trump arrived in Britain after a fraught North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels where he piled pressure on allies to double their defence spending.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper during his first official visit to the UK, Trump laid into May's plans to maintain close links with the European Union post-Brexit.

"I would actually say that she probably went the opposite way".

"The people voted to break it up so I would imagine that's what they would do, but maybe they're taking a different route - I don't know if that is what they voted for". "I think he has done a very bad job on terrorism", the president said.

"But when they make you feel unwelcome, why would I stay there?"

"I think he is a great representative for your country", he said.

Dishing up a fresh dose of chaos on his European tour, President Donald Trump left behind a contentious North Atlantic Treaty Organisation gathering in Brussels and moved on to Britain, where a pomp-filled welcome ceremony was soon overshadowed by an interview in which Trump blasted Prime Minister Theresa May, blamed London's mayor for terror attacks against the city and argued that Europe was "losing its culture" because of immigration. Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all, who would think?

The Trumps had earlier arrived at Stansted with their sizeable entourage. 'You go through certain areas that didn't exist ten or 15 years ago.' He added: 'Allowing the immigration to take place in Europe is a shame'.

Protesters against the visit of President Donald Trump gather near an entrance to the US ambassador's residence Winfield House in Regents Park in London on July 12, 2018.

Some carried placards saying Special Relationship? More are planned for the second day of Mr Trump's visit.

But they avoided the noise and spectacle of the protests on the ground by travelling by helicopter between the airport, London and Oxfordshire.

Donald Trump and wife Melania have been pictured dressed up to the nines at a lavish dinner at Blenheim Palace, hosted by Theresa May.

Trump is skipping London on his tour of the United Kingdom, after hundreds of thousands of Brits who vowed to swarm streets of the capital to protest him.

"The United States' commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation remains very strong", Trump told reporters at a surprise news conference following an emergency session of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members held to address his threats.

He claims that Brexit voters may not get "what they voted for".

Trump and his wife Melania are due to meet the 92-year-old monarch at Windsor Castle on Friday and both the imposing setting and Elizabeth being one of the most admired women in the world is expected to temper the United States president's iconaclastic ways.
