Trump slams record European Union fine against Google

Android may not remain free after EU fine warns Google CEO Pichai

The European Commission has fined Google five billion USA dollars for anti-trust violations - the biggest fine given by European anti-trust regulators against a single firm.

"The European Union just slapped a Five Billion Dollar fine on one of our great companies, Google", Trump tweeted in reaction to the 4.34 billion euro (US$5 billion) penalty slapped on Google for abusing the dominance of its mobile operating system.

Prevented Android phone makers from selling devices that run "forked" versions of the operating system. Unlockd is fighting for a permanent injunction against its threatened ejection from the Google app store.

The president appeared to be using the antitrust fine as a salvo in his escalating trade war with the EU.

Google is also accused of forcing smartphone makers like Samsung and Huawei to preinstall its own services, such as Google Search and Google Maps, on Android.

According to Margrethe Vestager, the European Union's competition chief, Google used Android's dominant market position to strengthen its lead in search, a practice that has been deemed illegal in the EU. In a lengthy address he says that the "decision rejects the business model that supports Android, which has created more choice for everyone, not less".

US President Donald Trump criticised the European competition watchdog's decision to fine Google $5 billion on Wednesday, saying the EU had "taken advantage of the U.S".

After all, if Google can't rely on the revenue stream from Android, that could mean that device manufacturers might, down the line, be faced with paying for Android service - costs that could make for more expensive phones for users.
