Trump says North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries should ´reimburse´ USA for defense costs

"Our President - the orange guy Trump- is in Belgium right now - at the NATO Summit, fighting over how many ways they will split the check", Jimmy Kimmel told his late night viewers about POTUS's latest.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries "really stepped up their commitment and stepped it up like they never have before", he added, saying the total spending amount could reach $40 billion and would be officially announced later in the day.

TRUMP: "Because of me, they've raised about $40 billion over the previous year." - remarks about NATO-member spending on defense at breakfast with Stoltenberg.

In a series of tweets from the Belgian capital, Mr. Trump said, "Presidents have been trying unsuccessfully for years to get Germany and other rich NATO Nations to pay more toward their protection from Russian Federation".

United States officials have told Reuters that Washington is preparing another review of strategy, a year after Trump begrudgingly agreed to extend involvement in the 17-year-old war. Trump and Merkel later held businesslike talks on the sidelines of the summit.

At the end of the first day, Trump unsettled allies even more by questioning the value of the military alliance, which was formed to counter Soviet aggression during the Cold War.

Germany now spends 1.24% of its GDP on defense, and has committed to hitting 2% by 2024, something that Trump, and other U.S. leaders before him, have tried to hasten.

What NATO partners dispute is Trump's repeated suggestion that the US gets little in return for its commitment to defend member countries if threatened.

More news: Donald Trump: NATO allies should double defence spend goal

Earlier Thursday, Trump called out USA allies on Twitter as he attended a second day of meetings with leaders of the military alliance.

On day two, leaders will welcome non-NATO partners including Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Ukraine's Petro Poroshenko to the alliance's new glass-and-steel headquarters as they seek to focus on policy rather than politics.

Trump said he wanted "peace all over the world, that's my goal", and he wanted to achieve this by building up the military, with his dream to have the best military equipment in the world and never have to use it.

There, he announced that Canada will assume command of a new NATO training mission in Iraq - a deployment of 250 Canadian Armed Forces personnel, aimed in part at staving off Trump's complaints that Canada and other NATO allies are not doing enough to contribute to their NATO defence commitments.

Diplomats were already anxious about the summit ahead of time, not least because of an abrasive G7 meeting last month, when Mr Trump renounced a summit communique that had previously been jointly agreed.

The meeting brought together Mr Trump and Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau, who irritated the USA president at the G7 by declaring that his country would not be pushed around.

In fact, the 29 members each pay a portion of NATO's annual US$3-billion operating budget based on the size of their economies.
