Trump meets Theresa May, promptly says Boris Johnson would be ‘great PM’

Theresa May has met Angela Merkel only hours after the Cabinet's Brexit turmoil

The Sun said its interview with Trump was conducted in Brussels before he left for the British leg of his trip. His remarks on Brexit came the same day May's government published long-awaited proposals for Britain's relations with the European Union after it leaves the bloc next year.

The long-awaited document proposes keeping Britain and the bloc in a free market for goods, with a looser relationship for services.

Shortly after he told North Atlantic Treaty Organisation he didn't think the Brexit deal Mrs May was offering was the one people wanted, he continued to lay into the British prime minister, even backing her former foreign secretary Boris Johnson to be a successor.

The publication came after Mr Trump and First Lady Melania Trump arrived in England, hours after meeting Ms May at a lavish dinner to mark his first visit to Britain as USA president, amid multiple protests across the country.

Around £1.4 trillion ($1.85 billion/1.58 billion euros) of assets are managed in Britain for European clients, the government's "white paper" notes, and the City hosts most of the EU's trading for banks and insurance companies.

In a another swipe, Trump also said he would have done the Brexit negotiations "much differently" and claimed the prime minister did not listen to his advice.

"The deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one the people voted on", Trump said.

Mrs May appealed to European negotiators to "engage" with her blueprint in the same spirit of respect that she said her government was taking toward the EU's own principles and red lines.

The English daily also quoted Trump as saying that Johnson would make a great prime minister. "I think he's got what it takes", he added.

Asked directly whether he thinks Johnson might someday replace May, he declined to comment, saying he wasn't interested in "pitting one against the other".

"The government now has got to go back to the drawing board, it has got to reflect on what Brexit actually means", David Jones, a former Brexit minister, told "Briefings on Brexit."

Trump and his wife, Melania, met British Prime Minister Theresa May and her husband Philip for a formal dinner at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire on Thursday.

Trump's visit comes amid fierce protests against the USA leader, which included a blip portraying him as a big baby.

Adding to his extraordinary takedown of May, Trump praised Boris Johnson, who stepped down this week as foreign secretary over Brexit.

"I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London". I haven't been there in a long time.

Protesters gathered outside the U.S. ambassador's residence in London, where the Trumps are staying tonight, and near Blenheim Palace.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who signed off on the so-called "Trump Baby" blimp, defended the decision Thursday, arguing the protests were not anti-American.

It also confirms that Brexit will take place on 29 March 2019. Look at what is going on in London.

The president also took the opportunity to express his "great love for countries in Europe", but claimed that allowing in refugees fleeing conflict and starvation was causing the continent to lose its culture. I think she is a nice person.

"Mr President, Sir Winston Churchill once said that "to have the United States at our side was, to me, the greatest joy", May told Trump, according to a text of her speech provided by her office.

Trump blamed the city's woes on immigration, and said it was a "shame" Europe was letting in so many migrants.

At the dinner, which was attended by leading business figures, Mrs May said: "Thousands of USA companies have a home in the United Kingdom, providing jobs for over million people here".

The document also stressed the increasingly online nature of crime, saying that "malicious cyber activity knows no worldwide boundaries and has grown in terms of intensity, complexity and severity over the course of the last year" and called for increased cooperation in this area.
