Tropical storm Chris reaches hurricane strength as it heads north toward Newfoundland

The remnants of Hurricane Beryl have a 40 percent chance of reforming as a storm later this week over the Bahamas and western Atlantic Ocean forecasters said Monday morning. This is the five-day forecast

Tropical Storm Chris continues to spin not far off the North Carolina coast and is now centered roughly 200 miles to the south-southeast of Cape Hatteras.

With maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, Chris is about 200 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., according to the 5 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

Chris will begin a northeastern course from late Tuesday off the U.S. Atlantic coast, the center said, adding that projections showed it possibly making landfall in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia late on Wednesday or early on Thursday.

But the hurricane could cause life-threatening surf and rip conditions in some portions of the North Carolina coast and mid-Atlantic states over the next few days.

Chris is starting to move northeast around 9 miles per hour.

An Air Force Reserve Reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to fly over Chris Tuesday afternoon. Local officials were advised to monitor the storm's movement.

However, Chris is expected to remain well offshore over the next several days, moving slowly at first and then accelerating away from the United States later in the week.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Chris was expected to remain well off the US coast.
