Tropical Storm Beryl in Atlantic; 2nd named storm of season

Subtropical Storm Alberto came ashore on the Florida Panhandle in late May. Despite this early season activity some forecasters are expecting the rest of the season to be below average

However, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said another low-pressure system a few hundred miles southeast of North Carolina may develop into a tropical depression and move slowly or stall over the weekend.

A number of Caribbean islands issued tropical storm and hurricane watches Friday afternoon ahead of Category 1 Hurricane Beryl, which the National Hurricane Center described as a "miniature" and unpredictable. "In fact, this system will probably lose its designation in about three days - before it even reaches the Lesser Antilles", the publication reported on Thursday, July 5. It is east of SC and forecasters believe the system could strengthen before the weekend as it moves to the west-northwest and then to the north between Bermuda and the East Coast of the United States. Beryl is expected to weaken starting on Sunday or Monday. Tropical Depression Two was, however, expected to dissipate east of the Lesser Antilles over the weekend, the NHC said. Satellite data helped convince forecasters that the storm had met tropical cyclone criteria.

Some increase in showers and gusty winds are expected in the Lesser Antilles this weekend.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 65 miles per hour with higher gusts.

An upgrade to a tropical storm occurs when cyclonic circulation becomes more organized and maximum sustained winds gust between 39 miles per hour and 73 miles per hour.

A quick tropics update now as you may or may not have heard Tropical Storm Beryl officially formed in the Atlantic Ocean, which happened basically out of nowhere.

A tropical system developed into Hurricane Beryl on Friday.

The system may not degenerate until it reaches the vicinity of Hispaniola and the central Caribbean Sea. From 1950 through 2017, the average number of named storms has been 11 (though from 1981-2010, the average has been 12).
