Tiger Woods moves into share of lead at British Open

Spieth, who has earned £28million in winnings during his career, still didn't have it in him to complain and told the barber to keep the change from a £20 note, despite it costing less than half that. For three magical hours the three-time Open champion played like he'd never drifted into the dark competitive hole that's defined his last few years.

Moments later, Woods began his charge to get into contention at a major for the first time in five years.

By the end of the day, Woods sat in sixth, four shots back of Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele.

"I played well, I really did", he added.

On a day that was ideal for low scoring, Woods let rip with his driver and tucked into the birdie buffet with his red-hot putter, briefly grabbing a share of the lead - something the American had not done at a major since the 2013 Masters.

"And he's like, 'I put my chips behind anything that you decide always.' That kind of gave me that little extra boost that might have gotten it onto the front of the green".

It never stopped. Seven players had a share of the lead at one point. "It was like a 9 pound haircut and I tipped them".

There would be a sense of symmetry to the achievement if Spieth does win on Scotland's North Sea coast - Harrington's double came at Carnoustie in 2007 and then Birkdale in 2008.

"I'm right there", he said.

A bogey on the 16th and a par save from short of the Barry Burn on the 18th gave him a 66.

Using the same mojo that saw him rally from seven shots down to win the French Open in his last start, underrated Swedish star (and World No. 11!) Alex Noren goes spooky low, busting his surprisingly awful major championship record.

Kevin Chappell (67) is two shots back at 7-under.

For Woods, a return to championship form would take on special meaning, given the personal demons and injuries he has overcome.

Woods, who won back-to-back Opens himself in 2005 and 2006, is in a group of players at five-under along with the likes of Zach Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood.

Large crowds are following the 42-year-old Woods, who has yet to win in his latest comeback.

The opening hole is 396 yards on the card, with the fairway getting narrow between two bunkers.

Tiger Woods, who holds the lowest third round scoring average (68.44) on the PGA Tour this season, has made five birdies through his first 11 holes today. It was meant to be what I normally get but instead he went a little shorter, ' Spieth said.

Three players - including defending champion Jordan Spieth - are tied at the top of the leaderboard at 9-under par.
