The Open: Butch Harmon reviews Tiger Woods' round at Carnoustie

The 147th Open Championship

If he can shoot one-over when he is struggling for control, then it augurs well for when he has the ball on a string, if such a thing is possible around Carnoustie in Open week.

Mother Nature always has a more significant say in how British Opens unfold than she does in any of the other three. So bad bounce off a lump in the rock-hard fairways be damned - even if the player has piped a flawless tee shot down the middle.

You will see me mention the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in my playbook.

Halfway through play, the field will be narrowed.

"With links golf, you have to adapt, " Rory McIlroy said Wednesday.

Depite not playing very well on the back nine on Thursday, Tiger is still very much in the thick of the tournament.

The Carnoustie course is the wildcard, several degrees of difficulty up from Ballyliffin and Gullane and bone dry amid a summer drought.

"I'd love to win, but I can just go out there and control what I can control and just try and keep moving up the leaderboard from whatever position I'm in".

"No expectations, just go out and hope that good form continues and if I can put myself thereabouts on Sunday that'd be great".

The biggest crowds, however, will probably be with Woods, who was due to tee off at 3.21pm local time alongside Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and Scotland's top-ranked golfer, Russell Knox. "I think I was only a few back of the lead". I hadn't seen a weather change like that of all my years on tour, not like that, not that quickly. But creativity plays such an important role, and you've got guys like Tom playing late in his career, doing well. I felt like the greens were not as slow as we've had in the past because the wind hadn't been up yet.

"It really was cold. We heard forecasts that rain might come in, it would be a little bit windier, but not that type of drop".

It cost Woods dearly, ending his chance of winning the Grand Slam that year.

"It does look pretty tame, " Justin Thomas said of this week's forecast. "So the whole idea of these practice rounds is just to get a good feel for what I'm going to do, and then adjust accordingly".

"Going forward, you never know what you're going to have in Scotland. It makes it very hard".

Last five champions: 2017 Jordan Spieth (Royal Birkdale), 2016 Henrik Stenson (Royal Troon), 2015 Zach Johnson (St Andrews), 2014 Rory McIlroy (Royal Liverpool), 2013 Phil Mickelson (Muirfield). "And with the ball running, it runs right into the bunkers". Most importantly, maybe, he played the nasty final three holes in even par on a day where they were playing more than a stroke over par in the aggregate. Carnoustie is known as the hardest course in The Open rotation and Fowler is the type of player that can grind it out on a tough course.

Brooks Koepka has played 18 majors and won two of them. "Pitch black", he said when asked how dark the dark times were.
