‘The English Patient’ voted best Man Booker Prize victor ever

But on Sunday evening Ondaatje edged ahead, with his bestselling novel The English Patient being named the best victor of the Booker prize of the last 50 years, in a public vote.

The Canadian writer's tale of love and conflict during World War II was named victor of the Golden Man Booker Prize for fiction at a ceremony in London on Sunday.

The judges were Robert McCrum, who choseIn A Free Stateby VS Naipaul for the 1970s, Lemn Sissay, who chose Moon Tigerby Penelope Lively for the 1980s, Kamila Shamsie, who choseThe English Patientby Michael Ondaatje for the 1990s, Simon Mayo, who choseWolf Hallby Hilary Mantel for the noughties, and Hollie McNish, who choseLincoln In The Bardoby George Saunders for the 2010s.

"Not for a second do I believe this is the best book on the list - or any other list that could have been put together of Booker novels", Ondaatje said at the awards ceremony at London's Southbank.

The Fund's Chairman of the Booker prize, Baroness Helena Kennedy in a statement following the vote, called the novel "the English patient" "the thrill of working in the field of fiction, poetic and philosophical".

All 51 previous Booker winners were considered by a panel of judges, who whittled them down to one from each decade. In 1996, the Director Anthony Minghella took on the book of the same name the film; it played, in particular, rife Fiennes, Willem Dafoe and Colin Firth.

The victor of the special one-off competition held to mark the Man Booker Prize's 50th anniversary celebrations was chosen by the public. "It's intricately and rewardingly structured, beautifully written, with great humanity written into every page", said Shamsie, as reported by the Guardian. "As we celebrate the prize's 50th anniversary, it's a testament to the impact and legacy of the Man Booker Prize that all of the winning books are still in print". He is one of only two authors whose work has won the Booker Prize and an Oscar, and his latest novel, Warlight, has just been published by Jonathan Cape.
