Strawless lids coming to Starbucks beverages

At Starbucks' annual general meeting in March, 29% of shareholders supported a resolution asking the company to ban straws and improve its recycling standards.

Alexander said in a statement: "I am really excited to have developed something that can be part of this big transformation of going strawless." .

Seattle, where Starbucks is based, recently became the first city in the country to ban plastic utensils and straws.

It will be used for all cold drinks with the exception of Frappuccinos, which will be served with a disposable, paper straw.

The coffee company announced Monday it will phase out plastic straws from all its stores by 2020.

Rival burger chain A&W Food Services of Canada Inc. has said it will eliminate all plastic straws from its restaurants by the end of this year.

Environmental activists have been pressuring businesses to ditch plastic straws because they can end up in the ocean and hurt marine life.

One in four New Zealanders have a disability and for many of them a plastic straw helps hydrate or feed themselves as well as giving them independence. Straws are lower-hanging fruit in the battle against plastic, but hopefully it provides the motivation Starbucks needs to keep fighting in all the ways that count. At the time, Starbucks wavered on the proposal; a company spokesperson told Mic that Starbucks would be developing a "recyclable and compostable cup solution", but wouldn't reveal specifically its plans for straws. Blended ice drinks will be distributed using biodegradable straw replacements. It will be trialing a "5p" fee on takeaway hot drink cups, nicknamed a "latte levy," in London, with rollout to 950 other stores in the United Kingdom, to encourage use of reusable cups.

While Australia still comes to grips with the single-use plastic bag ban adopted by supermarkets Woolworths and Coles and other retailers, plastic straws have become another battleground for companies looking to reduce waste.

The no-straw movement, which had already been brewing in certain communities and beach towns, gained mainstream traction three years ago after a video showing a sea turtle with a plastic straw wedged in its nose went viral. Phased rollouts within the United States and Canada will then follow.
